Tic-Tac-Toe
Classic noughts and crosses against an unbeatable computer. Can you force a draw?
How to Play Tic-Tac-Toe
Tic-Tac-Toe is the timeless game of Xs and Os played on a three-by-three grid. You play as X against a computer opponent. Take turns placing your mark in empty squares, and the first to line up three in a row — horizontally, vertically or diagonally — wins. Our computer uses a perfect strategy, so the best you can usually achieve is a draw.
Controls
- Click or tap any empty square to place your X
- The computer responds automatically with its O
- Use the New Game button to reset the board
Tips & Strategy
- Take the center square whenever it's available — it's the strongest position.
- Watch for the computer's two-in-a-row threats and block them immediately.
- Create a 'fork' — two winning threats at once — to force a win against weaker opponents.
- Against a perfect opponent, playing flawlessly guarantees at least a draw.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I beat the computer?
The computer plays a perfect strategy, so it can't be beaten with perfect play — but a single mistake on its part is impossible, so aim for a draw.
Why do so many games end in a draw?
Tic-Tac-Toe is a 'solved' game; when both players play optimally, the result is always a draw.
Is the center really the best move?
Yes — the center square is part of four possible winning lines, more than any other square.
